Our History

The Dodgson Foundation is a local Brighton & Hove based charity, primarily serving the needs of older residents both in the city and the wider Sussex area.

It was formed in 1989 as a result of an immensely generous initial donation from local business people, Derek and Eileen Dodgson. Since then the capital has been managed by the trustees to provide sufficient income to fund both the gifting of annual grants to other local charities, as well as applications from social services for individuals whose needs coincide with the Foundations charitable objectives.

What we fund

The Foundation is very conscious that the well being of older people, (broadly those aged over 55) can be adversely affected by a wide range of disadvantages be those financial, health, or social.

Upper most in our minds is how our resources can make a difference and bring relief to those who lack the capacity to act for themselves. We are particularly aware of the adverse effect of deteriorating mental health due to isolation.

We can be quite flexible where we perceive there is a need to be so.

How we operate

Every year our trustees meet to consider our annual grants programme.

We have been supporting a number of local charities for a number of years, however these are reviewed annually in the light of changing social and economic needs, and to ensure they align with our charitable objectives.

We are always happy to consider new approaches from other charities.
